Obituary
for John Quincy Mask

Transcribed version:
Terrible and Fatal accident - Yesterday afternoon Company K of the 5th
Regiment M.N.G. commanded by Capt. Zollinger, went down to the White
Rock Retreat for the purpose of spending the afternoon in target
practice. They were accompanied by Col. Herbert and a number
of
the officers and men of the regiment. The target was set up
against a large tree, and the firing commenced. John Q. Mask,
a
member of Company B, who was present in citizen's dress, persisted,
after repeated warnings and orders from the officers, in standing
immediately behind the tree on which the target was fixed, and it is
supposed that in leaning out he received a shot in the head, causing
his immediate death. The armorer going forward to mark a
shot,
found the body of Mr. Mask lying behind the tree. A bullet
had
entered his mouth, shattering the top of his head to a horrible extent.
The body was immediately removed to the pavilion and an
inquest
held, the jury returning a verdict of accidental death. This
distressing ending to a pleasure excursion cast a deep gloom over all
present, although no blame can be attached to anyone, as Mr. Mask was
repeatedly warned of the danger he was incurring. The body
was
brought back to the city last night.
